I really thought his character was realistic in the sense that he shown his emotions at proper times. He didn't cry all the time like Kira but he also wasn't a statue like Lacus. Athrun is arguably one of the best pilots in the series and he isn't only skilled when it comes to piloting a mobile suit he is also quite skillful with other weaponry. Since Athrun prevented Genesis from destroying the Earth I felt that he was the real hero of the series.
